At Prior’s Court, we believe every achievement deserves to be recognised. And for 17-year-old day student Fredi, a recent birthday celebration became a powerful example of how partnership working between families and staff can unlock meaningful experiences and magical moments for autistic young people with complex needs and their families.

Over the weekend, Fredi enjoyed a birthday meal out at a restaurant with his family - an experience his mum, Holly, describes as a “massive achievement.”

Preparation makes all the difference

Going out for a meal might be a simple pleasure for many, but for Fredi, dining in a public space had often been a source of stress and discomfort. But this time, things were different - because of preparation, understanding, and shared learning.

Holly arranged several adaptations ahead of the visit:

  • Choosing a quieter time for their booking
  • Requesting a booth to give Fredi more space to spread out his things
  • Asking for the background music to be turned off

“Fredi was settled because he knew the environment was best adapted to him as much as possible"

Learning together

Holly credits the positive experience to the strong partnership between Fredi’s family and the team supporting him at Prior’s Court, allowing for progress both in and out of the classroom.

I really do believe that because Fredi is happy in his day-to-day at Prior's Court - and the way Prior's Court has taught myself and Fredi to prepare for these kinds of things - it has massively helped.

Fredi’s class teacher, Kerry, went above and beyond to support this milestone. She created tailored social stories to help Fredi understand what to expect, taking the time to do so even outside of her working hours. That extra layer of preparation helped Fredi feel confident and secure in the lead-up to his birthday meal.

These things and this level of support is what has helped Fredi so much, that he feels supported and understood in a way I believe he never has before.

Experiencing something others may take for granted

Seeing Fredi enjoy something that once was previously challenging was incredibly important for his family.

“Every day is different and he still has his struggles, but I am so proud of him It made me so happy to see him enjoying the simple things that people take for granted. I really can't thank you enough. Fredi has been with you for almost a year now and wow—what a difference!”

We are proud to share in Fredi’s achievement and grateful to all the staff who played a role in helping him reach this moment. His story is a reminder of what’s possible when autistic young people with complex needs are supported with knowledge, collaboration and consistent care.
