At the start of June, Prior’s Court young person Alexander had a birthday to remember as a beach visit marked his first occasion with his family out in public for a long time.

For many families of the autistic young people with complex needs at Prior’s Court, moments like this can feel out of reach. But thanks to careful planning, personalised support, and strong relationships between staff and family, this special day became a reality.

Alexander was supported on the trip to Highcliffe Beach by team members Jacob, Prempeh and Arinze. The location was chosen with input from staff who know Alexander well, alongside liaison with his mum, to ensure the environment would be both motivating and manageable. Highcliffe Beach was a natural fit as it is a regular community trip for Alexander.

To help Alexander manage his excitement, the visit was introduced on the morning of the trip itself using visual supports.

Alexander's mum Tricia said:

"Alexander had the best birthday! Our thanks go to all those at Prior’s Court who were involved in the careful, considered planning of the day and also huge thanks to the wonderful support of his team who accompanied him to the beach.  Happy memories were created for all of us!"

Clare Gilmour, Prior's Court Care Manager who oversees Alexander’s residential home on-site, said: "This visit is a powerful reminder of what is possible with the right support in place and the kind of life-affirming experience that families may once have thought would never be possible."
