Our education & residential care What young people learn A friendly face at our Reception desk One of the first interactions anyone has with an organisation is at a Reception desk where first impressions can be made – and there is an extra very friendly face on our Reception every Friday morning making a great first impression. Young adult Alfie is exploring the world of work on Reception for an hour or so every Friday morning, supported by Vocational Skills Instructor Lyn. Alfie’s tasks include: Scanning in paper forms submitted to Reception and then shredding the hard copies. Checking through consumables and uniform orders made digitally by Prior’s Court staff members, and then packing these orders. Those orders are then delivered by another young person as part of their Vocational Skills learning. Greeting visitors, asking them to sign in and sign out, and asking for ID when required. While Alfie needs prompting to complete a lot of his tasks, he is able to manage an increasing amount with less support. Visitor management is the area where Alfie requires most prompts. But, from the next term in January, Alfie should have a script that he can follow to support him in this area and develop his skills towards independence. The environment of Reception is ideal for Alfie as a) he is very social and b) is technology-driven. Alfie also uses a Grid to speak rather than his voice. Reception could be seen as a role which requires one to speak, but in this instance, Alfie, as a person who uses an alternative communication method, is being empowered to do these kinds of work tasks.
