Our education & residential care Creating shared memories with families: a McDonald's trip At Prior’s Court, we know that the journey for families of autistic young people with complex needs can often feel different from that of other families. Having your child in residential education, away from the family home, is an experience no family would choose to have to go through unless there was no other way. That’s why our staff members work so hard towards creating shared experiences - moments where families can come together in everyday settings, creating positive memories and building meaningful connections. A recent example of this came from the family of residential students, and brothers, Joel and Thomas, who kindly shared a joyful photo of their sons enjoying a trip to McDonald's. This was a visit supported by Prior's Court staff members, and what might seem like a simple outing to some is, for these young people and their families, a significant and heartwarming achievement. Both Joel and Thomas waited patiently for their food - a skill that has developed over time thanks to regular opportunities for community dining supported by Prior's Court staff. For autistic young people with complex needs, routines like waiting in a queue or navigating busy environments can present significant challenges. But through consistent support and gradual exposure, young people like Thomas and Joel are empowered to develop these skills in a safe and positive way.
