This week, a group from the AWE came on to site to do some volunteering work to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the young people we support.

The group of 13 enthusiastic volunteers were tasked with cutting down a number of dense and overgrown hedges which were providing the young people with fun but not very safe climbing frames. They got stuck in immediately, clearing two thirds of the shrubbery away and filling countless tonne bags, as well as three trailers, of greenery.

Two extremely strong and determined volunteers even managed to clear one of the established stumps after much wiggling and kicking, ensuring that this particular bush will not grow back.

The area is now much more open and airy, and is much safer for the young people to explore. The eventual plan is to re-plant shrubs to provide a slight barrier, but these won't grow to be quite so large and dense, ensuring the safety of every young person we support.
