Students from Newbury College visited Prior’s Court for a volunteering day within the Young Adult Provision, giving them the chance to learn more about working in a specialist care setting.

10 students from Newbury College's Health and Social Care course came to Prior's Court to lend a hand weeding the gardens in the Young Adult Provision, and to learn more about what working at Prior's Court, and working in Care more generally, might look like. The group have previously worked with Prior's Court's Learning, Development, and Recruitment Coach Andy Allen, who was able to accompany them for part of the day and expand on how Prior's Court supports young autistic people with complex needs.

In between volunteering, the group were able to interact with staff members and young people supported by Prior's Court, and ask in-depth questions about entering the world of care. One of the volunteers already works two days a week in one of the homes on site, so she was able to come and discover Prior's Court more generally.

As well as a day of learning, this session provided them with the opportunity to actively improve the environment for our young adults. By weeding the gardens behind the homes, they helped to provide a more accessible environment for learning and regulating, as well as making it a more pleasant environment to be in.

The area the group were weeding often provides horticultural lessons for the young adults alongside those on the main site, and provides a space in which to grow their own fruit and vegetables and develop those skills. It also contains a swing which provides an area for movement breaks to help with regulation. All of which were tidied up and made more pleasant for the young adults living in the homes.
