A wonderful group from Fortra took on an assortment of tasks around site during their volunteering day, from weeding to bark laying, no job was too much for them!

In the morning, the small group of 7 weeded some of the areas underneath the play equipment on the track, preventing weeds and roots from coming through and damaging the rubber matting designed to keep the young people we support safe. They weeded and edged two of the larger areas, uncovering some matting that had become overgrown and widening the safe spaces around each piece of equipment.

In the afternoon, they tackled a couple of very different tasks, the first of which involving laying down bark under the play equipment in several of the young people's homes, ensuring the ground is safe and level to improve accessibility. They also did the same for the music circle, an incredibly popular outdoor space, which will allow even more of our young people to access it.

They also weeded an area of our orchard where we are planning to plant fruit bushes. This will help to prevent weeds growing and strangling the young bushes, allowing them to thrive and teach our young people about maintenance and eventually harvesting.

In total, the group managed a total of around 25 hours of work and have helped to make a real difference to the lives of the autistic young people with complex needs that we support.
